“I wish I had been more prepared for how to handle that as a wife. I wish that him and I had better communication, better tools for how to talk about that with one another…because we didn’t.”

- Gracie Parrish Miller

Gracie Parrish Miller joined the The Hopecast for a two-part podcast to discuss her story of first responder loss along with host Rachael Flick who lost her husband Micah Flick in 2018 to a line of duty death in Colorado.

Gracie and Rachael discuss regrets, wisdom and things they with they could have done different looking back at their respective marriages to Zack and Micah.

“I grew up in home and in a world where your job was your job but it wasn’t your way of life. It wasn’t your identity…It didn’t impact how we sat in a restaurant. It didn’t impact our daily life,” Gracie says in the podcast. “I now know the challenges that come with being a first responder family, just in the mental health and in the marriage…and (looking back) I wish I would have been more of an advocate for our marriage.”

Rachael adds: “There were parts of Micah that I didn’t know until after he died because they were shared with me by his coworkers…I was like ‘Oh my gosh, I so wish I had heard these things about him before he died.”

About The Hopecast with Rachael Flick Podcast:

In February of 2018, Rachael’s husband Micah was murdered in the line of duty. Micah was shot while protecting fellow police officers and citizens who came under fire during the arrest of a car thief. Micah left Rachael, and their seven year old twins, behind in his act of heroism. Devastated by the death of the future she and Micah had dreamed of together, Rachael nevertheless refused to succumb to her circumstances. As a counselor, she began to apply practical skills to grieve well and grow through the painful, traumatic experiences. In The Hopecast, Rachael and her guests will share their stories on their journeys of resilience. These stories will motivate and encourage you with clarity, direction and healing. Listen and meet the people who have been empowered by hope. Come and learn the skills to face your past and prepare for your wholehearted future.
